Who We Are

The Dog Training School was first founded in 1995 by Clive Knapp H.dip.P.D.I. This ran successfully with many happy dogs and owners having attended the courses offered. Clive is now back in the UK after spending several years abroard and will once again offer ethical dog training courses for owners and dogs to enjoy.

Why Attend Dog Training School

Clive has over 47 years experience training dogs. At the age of 16 he trained his first working dog, a Dobermann, to compete in Kennel Club Working Trials. By the time he was 19 he was running training classes for working and family owned dogs with his mentor in the dog world.

After joining Hertfordshire Police Dog Section, and training his first operational Police Dog, the team qualified as National Champion Police Dog and Working Trials Champions. He held the position of Top Operational handler for seven consecutive years.

He continued to run his training classes on a Sunday morning, held at the John Dickenson print works social club grounds in Apsley Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

In 1979 Clive was appointed Chief Instructor to Hertfordshire Dog section where he remained until his retirement from the force in 1995.

The Dog Training School was started in Bourne End, Hemel Hempstead on his retirement. The school was actively supported by Dacorum Borough Council. The schools aims were to teach responsible dog ownership.

Sadly the school closed due to circumstances beyond its control and Clive was invited to set up a dedicated Explosive Search Dog Unit for one of the larger financial institutions in the City Of London.

Clive was invited, by the then Head of Surrey Police Dogs, to return to the Police Service where he eventually took over the running of Surrey Police Dog School. The school provided Instructor and Dog training for Police and Customs services throughout the United Kingdom. The brief for Clive, at Surrey, was to develop the schools potential as an International Dog School providing expert advice and tuition, to governments and other agencies, and training for Instructors and handlers through the world.

France, Russia (Moscow and St. Petersburg), Singapore, New Zealand, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Australia, Hong Kong, China and Ecuador are amongst the countries Clive visited to inspect and set in place animal welfare and training programmes, for Police and Customs dog sections, provided by Surrey Police.

What are the aims and objectives

Clive would love to pass on the knowledge and experience he has gained during the past 47 years to as many dog owners as possible thereby passing on a greater understanding of their responsibility as a dog owner to society in general. In doing so he is hoping that dog owners will fully understand the simplicity and tremendous fun experienced during the training process together with the rewards a well trained dog can bring. Part of the training will also include a greater understanding of the importance of regular veterinary support for the wellbeing of the dog and handler.
